Dispersion of light

What if I told you the light we receive from the sun is a combination of 7 colours. Or what if I tell you white light is a combination of 7 colours. Could you believe me ?

Actually Sir Isaac Newton also told the same thing a long time ago. But none of them believed him.

So what he did was One bright sunny day, Newton darkened his room and made a hole in his window shutter, allowing just one beam of sunlight to enter the room. He then took a glass prism and placed it in the sunbeam. The result was a spectacular multicolored band of light just like a Rainbow.

The multicolored band of light is called a color spectrum. It includes seven colours namely Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. The acronym VIBGYOR would helps us remember the sequence of the colours. The splitting of White light into its component colours (VIBGYOR) is known as dispersion

If we look at the above diagram we come to know that after dispersion the lights are arranged in a particular order. Even if we pass light again and again from a different angle we see the dispersed light is in the same order. Why does the order not change and it is in the order of VIBGYOR ?

The answer is, these colour that get dispersed are associated with the wavelength. Which means each colour have different wavelength.

Violet has the least wavelength compared to the other colours in the spectrum of white light, hence it undergoes maximum refraction which means it bends the most and deviates the most and so it is in the bottom of the spectrum of white light.

If we now look at the Red colour, it has the maximum wavelength compared to other colours in the spectrum. There by it undergoes minimum refraction which means it deviates the least and hence it is at the top of the spectrum.

After the discovery of spectrum of white light. Sir Isaac Newton tried to split the colours of spectrum of the white light further by using an another similar prism.

However, he could not get any more colours. He then placed a second identical prism in an inverted position with respect to the first prism. He noticed that all the light passing out from the first prism and then passes through the second prism emerges out as a white light. This gave Sir Isaac Newton the idea that white light is made up of 7 colours (VIBGYOR)

Sir Isaac Newton also made a disc called as Dispersion Disc, also known as the Newton's Disc to prove this.

So what is a newton's disc?

Newton’s disc is a coloured disc which is painted with the colours of VioletIndigoBlueGreenYellowOrange, and Red in equal proportions so that when it is rotated very fast, the disc appears White.
