In times of intense stress, we sometimes let our angst with a squeal. And a new study suggests that plants do the same.
Unlike human screams, the frequency of the plant scream is too high for us to hear. The experiment was carried out with Tomato and Tobacco Plants and the microphones were placed 10cm away from them. When the plants were subjected to two different stresses - Draught and physical damage, the instrument picked up an ultrasonic squeal ranging between 20-100KHz.
It was found that the Tomato plant subjected to drought emitted 35 sounds an hour while the Tobacco plant emitted 11 an hour. When their stems were cut, the Tomato plant dropped to 25 an hour while the tobacco plant dropped to 25 an hour while tobacco increased to 15 an hour.
Studying the ways and types of sound emitted by different plants could help the farmers identify the potential problems with the crops with less guesswork.
The researchers suspect that the sound is produced by a process called cavitation. Where air bubbles form, expand and explode in the xylem stem.
Friends this quote by Jonathan Anthony Burkett leaves us thinking, but this quote is not just relatable with the trees but to each and every one of us... we don't exactly know every fellow human's stories and what they have been through. So never judge anyone or do not look for others fault without knowing the struggle they have been through !!
